The Dash Poem

I heard my Pastor read THE DASH POEM at a funeral recently. It was written by Linda Ellis, and I want to give her all the credit for this beautiful poem. I am sure that many people have her or read it, but it is always a great reminder to re-think of its enter meaning, and for those who have never read or heard this poem, this will be a treat for you.

Linda Ellis Reads The Dash…

Please enjoy The Dash poem written by Linda Ellis.
This poem has been enjoyed by millions around the world.
The words have changed many lives.
They could change yours, too…

The Dash
by Linda Ellis copyright 1996

I read of a man who stood to speak
at the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on the tombstone
from the beginning…to the end.

He noted that first came the date of birth
and spoke the following date with tears,
but he said what mattered most of all
was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time
that they spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved them
know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own,
the cars…the house…the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
and how we spend our dash.

So, think about this long and hard.
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
that can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
to consider what’s true and real
and always try to understand
the way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger
and show appreciation more
and love the people in our lives
like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect
and more often wear a smile,
remembering that this special dash
might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy is being read,
with your life’s actions to rehash…
would you be proud of the things they say
about how you spent YOUR dash?

A Servant’s Heart And Spirit

Each of us who are Christians or say that they are Christians should practice to be more like Jesus, who practice and walked of this earth with a servant’s heart.

My pastor, David Garcia of Grace World Outreach Church in Brooksville Florida, last Sunday spoke and taught about, having a servant’s spirit, and I thought about my life and the people that I come into contact with daily whether they are Christians or not, and I decided to write this post and have you as a reader question yourself and your spirit, but first let’s get an understanding of what is a servant’s spirit?

A servant’s middle name is generosity. How generous are you? I find that most people are very selfish. A servant gives without expecting anything in return. This is the kind of person you want to be like.

A servant has a sympathetic spirit towards others and not think about themselves first.

A servant rejoices when someone else is blessed, not get envious because of their blessings. A servant is good.

A servant reminds people of the character of Jesus, who came and shed his precious blood, and He took upon Himself all our sins and sufferings for you and me and died a brutal death, yet He rose on the third day so that you and I could be saved and all our sins would be forgiven and that we will spend eternity with our heavenly Father.

A servant is a peace maker. They are the ones who try to step in and correct a wrongful situation.

A servant is a team player who appreciates to receive correctness in his life.

And finally, please think about this question before you answer it and please be honest. Do you leave people very happy when you leave them, then before you was with them?

Take the time to share your thoughts with others.

Purpose

What is your purpose in Life? Do anyone of us know what that may be? When it is time for each of us to leave the world as we know it, what legacy will we leave behind for our children and love ones? What do you think people will say about you or what do you think they will miss about you or will they miss you at all? How we live our lives will determine the answers to these questions.

I have given this a lot of thought about my own life, and I have come to the conclusion that I think that God has placed me here to be helpful to others and not to be a selfish person. The legacy that I hope to leave behind is to follow my example in not putting themselves first as a selfish person would do. But we must also understand for those who dedicate their life to helping others, they must realize there will be people including family members that will sometimes take them for granted and sometimes even use them to their own advantage, but never the less, the calling that we have inside of us will not allow us to change who we are to become someone who we don’t even like.

If you have young children, are you teaching them to respect others as well as respecting their own bodies and their future mates by waiting to have sex until they are married. Also teaching them there will be those who will try to degrade them, embarrass them and do what ever they can to break their spirit. We as parents must teach our children to remain pure, and to not make the same mistakes that some of us as made.

I have made many mistakes in my life and if I had the chance to relive it, I would have done things so much different and that is why I felt it so important to write this article about what legacy will we leave behind, whether you are a Christian or not.

If your parents are still alive or no longer living, what do you remember the most about them, what legacy did they leave for you?

One day someone will ask your children or love ones, what legacy did you leave behind for them and what do they remember the most about your life with them?

As we grow older and hopefully wiser and take the time to look back at the life we have lived so far, what if anything would you have done different?

We can’t go back, but we can make a difference now, yes right now in what we can do today. Let’s live our lives as if Jesus was sitting next to us. Let’s take the time to help others, and too develop the minds of our youth’s, because they are the future. Look around and look where we are headed. Everyone is doing their own thing, doing what feels right for them at the moment, not thinking about who they may be hurting, thinking about me, me, me. Its time we turn all that around.

As I woke up this morning from a dream, the only thing that I remembered from the dream was something that I kept saying over and over, “ My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and His righteousness.”

So getting back to the question, what legacy will you leave behind, Take five minutes and stop whatever you are doing and just think about the question, and be honest with

your answer. Will your legacy last for an eternity or will it be just a fleeing thought?

Poem

REBIRTH
Winter destroys and brings lifelessness.  All the beautiful colors are gone.
Even the brown
leaves have disappeared.  Bare limbs are all that remain.  Months
pass by and labor is beginning.  From the ground green sprouts emerge.
Foliage has been restored.
Fragrant flowers adorn gardens and fields.  Birds sing their harmonious
songs.  Fruitfulness is
springing forth all over the earth.  Showers from heaven quenches the
thirsty soul. Sprayed is the soil
with radiant beams of sun.  Natures
debt has now been paid.  The sting
has been removed from death.
Renewed once more is the precious gift of life.

Another Dream

I had another dream last night. In this dream once again, I don’t know where it came from or the meaning, but I will attempt to guess its meaning.

In the dream I was playing in a baseball game and I was on the team in the field. One of the players on the other team was up at bat. When the pitch was delivered, this batter hit the ball so hard that the ball went way over the outer fence for what looked like a home run, but the next thing that I saw was a huge wind storm that came, and the ball that he hit was caught up in the wind storm and all I could do was to watch that same ball make a u-turn and come back over the same fence and land into the glove of my team player for an out.

When I woke up from that dream I thought about its meaning, and I thought about how many people including some Christian think that everything that they are doing or have done that has turned out good, that it will always be that way, and never think that one day it will be reversed, because it wasn’t done for the good of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and this verse came to my mind.

Matthew 7:21-23- Jesus Said, “ not everyone who says to me, LORD, LORD, will enter the kingdom of Heaven,  (22) many will say to me on that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles? (23) Then I will tell them plainly, I never knew you. Away from me, you evil doers.”

If you have a  different interpretation please feel free to share it with me and others.

Dreams

I woke up this morning from a dream, and I couldn’t go back to sleep as much as I wanted to, but this dream was different because there was no people in it, just thoughts, lots of thoughts. I don’t know the meaning of the dream or if it has a meaning. These were the thoughts-

Now- why now- maybe- could I- I don’t know- just a dream- I tried- what if- but- see I told you- can I- maybe tomorrow- see- there you go again- but you said- I’ll wait- I came close- what would they think- I almost- will they laugh- just a thought- I’m tired- maybe just maybe- I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me- if not me then who- excuses- see I told you- its tough- how can I- why can’t I – why me.

Is there something that you or I are suppose to do that we keep putting off, a dream or vision that has been on hold for a long time? Are we afraid to step out in faith and take a chance? Maybe we tried before and it ( what ever the it was) didn’t work that time.

I remember a life lesson I heard my pastor say one Sunday morning, “VISION AND DREAMS DO NOT EASILY COME TO FRUITION THE FIRST TIME.” Was this a dream or a wake up call?

One of the fastest ways to please someone is to show them kindness. Have you ever received a gift from someone and it wasn’t your birthday or Christmas or any kind of special holiday? I have, and it made me feel special because I knew that the person who gave it to me put a lot of thought into it, not because of anything that I did for them but just out of the kindness of their heart.

My Death

I recently wrote in my blog, that I am looking forward to death which I shared with my wife, and since then, I shared my same thoughts with other friends, and their reaction was similar as my wife’s reaction.

My wife wanted to know, did something happen at my last doctor’s visit, did he find something wrong, which I assured her he did not. Then she wanted to know if I was feeling well, which I let her know that I felt fine. My wife automatically made a phone call to one of my daughters to tell her what I had just said, and by the next day, I had to repeat the same answers to her as I did to her mother.

With the few friends that I shared my thoughts with, their reactions were a little different, their questions to me were, why in the world would you say something like that? They asked me if I was feeling depressed, lonely, or did something happen to make me feel this way. I told them that I have my up’s and down’s just like everyone else, and yes, I am tired, very tired, but none of that has anything to do with how I feel.

This was, and still is my thoughts about death, my death. The Bible tells us that we as Christians are in this world, but not of this world.

Ronnie Dauber is a Christian author, and she says it this way “It’s a very fine line that separates the natural instinct of setting up a nice home for our family and wanting only the best and most expensive possessions for our personal comfort and social status. God says in Isaiah 32:18, “My people will dwell in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.” He wants us to have a good home to live in here, and He wants us to be healthy and He even wants to give us the desires of our heart.

All these things are ours because He loves us and we love Him. We are not part of this world anymore and we don’t depend upon this world to survive – we depend on Him for everything. When we make Heaven our goal and our home to look forward to, the things we have here are simply needs or desires to get us through this journey. Yes, they may be nice things, but they are not our reason for living or our reason to want to stay here. We are not attached to them”

So thinking about my death, has nothing to do with me thinking about me doing anything to harm myself in any way, just to make my journey to spend eternity with my heavenly Father sooner rather then later. I am looking forward to going to a place where there is no more suffering, to a place where there is no more hunger or thirst, to a place where there is no sickness and no pain. To a mansion that Jesus has prepared just for me.

“In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”

John 14:1-3

This world is not my home, I am just passing through. So my question to you is, are you ready for death? Hebrews 9:27-28 “Just as a man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people, and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him”.

I have heard many people say over the years, that they are not ready to die, that they want to be here to see their grand children grow up, that they want to go here or there before they leave here. I used to say to people that tomorrow is not promise to them, but now I say, that tomorrow is promise to them, But, they have within themselves where they will spend their tomorrow’s, there is only two places, Heaven or Hell. There is no purgatory, you will not find that in the Bible. Are you ready for death? I am
